What are the long and short term effects of standing water in your home?

No matter the cause of the unwanted water damaging your home, whether it is from a faulty appliance or the weather, it is still an inconvenience that can lead to costly damages if not remediated quickly.  These are potential damages that unwanted water might cause in your home:

  • Health hazards: Depending on the cause of the unwanted water, whether it is from weather, or even worse, sewage, it is important to clean up immediately to reduce the risk of hazardous mold growth or unsanitary conditions from dangerous sewage.
  • Electrical risks:  If the flood water in your home reaches levels that are near open electrical sockets, it is important to turn off your home’s electricity to reduce the risk of electrocution.
  • Smelly standing water:  If you have ever left wet clothes in a closed washer for a week and then you open the washer lid, you have been met with a musty gross odor.  The same thing can happen in your home if your furniture or carpet has become waterlogged.  It is important to properly dry out any item in your home that absorbs the unwanted flood water.
  • Damage to your home’s walls and flooring: We all know that drywall is porous, so if standing water is near the walls of your home, it is important to have an expert use the proper equipment to check for moisture.  The last thing you want in your home is black mold hiding behind your walls!
